The Sacraments of the Episcopal Church:
Signs of Grace and Faith

In the Episcopal Church, sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, sacred acts instituted by Christ to convey God’s love and strengthen our faith. The Church recognizes two primary sacraments: Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. Baptism marks our initiation into the Christian faith, uniting us with Christ, cleansing us of sin, and welcoming us into the Church. The Holy Eucharist, also known as Communion or the Mass, is a continual source of grace and spiritual nourishment, deepening our connection with God as we share in Christ’s Body and Blood. In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to take Communion. If you prefer not to receive Communion, you are still invited to come forward, kneel, and cross your arms over your chest to receive a prayer of blessing. Baptized children are also welcome to receive Communion, though some parents choose to wait until their children are older.

In addition to these two foundational sacraments, the Church observes five sacramental rites that, while not instituted by Christ in the same way, are sacred milestones in the Christian journey. Confirmation affirms a mature commitment to Christ and strengthens the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Holy Matrimony celebrates the covenant of love and faithfulness in Christian marriage, reflecting Christ’s love for the Church. Reconciliation of a Penitent (Confession) offers God’s forgiveness and spiritual renewal. Holy Orders sets apart individuals for ministry as deacons, priests, or bishops, empowering them with the Holy Spirit’s grace to serve the Church. Unction (Anointing of the Sick) provides healing, comfort, and peace through prayer, the laying on of hands, and anointing with oil during times of illness or transition.

Together, these sacraments and sacramental rites are sacred moments that mark and enrich our faith journey, helping us to live out God’s grace in our daily lives. If you would like to learn more about the sacraments please contact one of our churches
